🌿 Hoya 'Puom Siam Ruby' (PMP 176) — leaves with ruby margins from Thailand

Hoya 'Puom Siam Ruby' is a rare hybrid of the Apocynaceae family, developed in Thailand and registered under the breeder code PMP 176. The hybrid results from crossing Hoya 'Joy' × Hoya 'Jennifer' — two appreciated cultivars with parents originating in Southeast Asia. The name is descriptive: "Siam" refers to Thailand (historical name), and "Ruby" to the ruby pigmentation of the leaf margins (NOT the flower colour). It is part of our Hoya collection.

Our specimen comes in a Ø10.5cm nursery pot, perfect to be moved into a decorative ceramic pot of the same size.

🌍 Origin and hybrid status

'Puom Siam Ruby' is an intercultivar hybrid produced in Thailand, one of the countries with the most active Hoya hybridization scene. The PMP 176 identification code ensures traceability — all plants under this code come from the same original genetic line. It is not a botanically validated species, but a commercial cultivar created through controlled pollination.

Unlike pure species such as Hoya soligamiana or Hoya latifolia 'Pot of Gold', the Puom Siam Ruby hybrid combines ornamental traits from two selected parents — waxy leaves with intensely coloured margins and a relatively compact growth, ideal for smaller spaces.

🌱 Foliage — raised venation and ruby margins

The dominant visual feature of the 'Puom Siam Ruby' hybrid are the thick, waxy leaves with glossy texture and two clear diagnostic features: pronounced raised venation (the main veins are visibly raised on the lamina surface) and dark-coloured margins — ruby to wine-violet. The margin pigmentation intensifies under strong indirect light, being the plant's main ornamental attraction. The base colour of the lamina is deep green.

The hybrid does not have silver splash — the variegation is structural (coloured margins), not in the form of speckles or spots. The stems are voluble, with compact growth compared to other Hoyas — typical indoor length with support reaches ~100 cm.

🌸 Inflorescences — delicate flowers with red corona

Be careful with expectations: despite the "Ruby" name, the flowers are NOT solid ruby red. The inflorescences are umbels with star-shaped, waxy flowers, white-pale pink with a central red corona — a delicate and elegant bicoloured contrast. The scent is subtle, perceptible mainly in the evening. Flowering appears after maturity (2-3 years indoors), with stable light and roots slightly tight in the pot.

The flowering cycle repeats on the same perennial peduncles — do not break off dried inflorescences. See more flowering indoor plants.

🌞 Care Requirements — Complete Guide

  • Light: bright indirect (~10,000-20,000 lux) — essential for intensifying the ruby pigmentation of leaf margins. Under low light, the margins may remain light green. Avoid intense direct sun.
  • Temperature: optimal 16-25°C. Avoid exposure below 10-14°C — hybrid sensitive to cold.
  • Watering: moderate — water when the substrate is 60-80% dry (top 2-3 cm). Summer every 7-10 days, winter every 14-20 days.
  • Humidity: 50-60% sufficient for maintenance; prefers 60-80% for flowering.
  • Substrate: airy, fast-draining — a mix of medium pine bark (50%), natural sphagnum (20%), perlite (20%), and a drainage layer of Vulkaponic at the pot base (10%).
  • Fertilising: monthly spring-summer with a mild formula for flowering plants (NPK 6-10-8).
  • Propagation: stem cuttings with 1-2 nodes in moist sphagnum; roots in 4-6 weeks.

🐾 Toxicity and Home Safety

The Hoya genus is considered non-toxic according to the ASPCA database, being safe for dogs, cats, and children. The milky sap, common in the Apocynaceae family, may cause minor skin irritation in very sensitive individuals — a pair of gloves is enough at repotting. Hoya 'Puom Siam Ruby' is thus featured among our child- and pet-friendly plants.

🎓 Why Choose Hoya 'Puom Siam Ruby'

It is an acquisition for collectors who appreciate ornamental hybrids with clear identity — the PMP 176 code guarantees traceability, and the combination of leaves with raised venation and ruby margins offers a strong visual statement. The compact habit makes it suitable for smaller spaces, and the cultivation requirements are accessible. It integrates beautifully into the rare Hoya collection and is a solid option for office plants with indirect light. See also other easy-care plants.

Are the flowers really ruby red?

No. Despite the name, the flowers are white-pale pink with a central red corona — a delicate bicoloured contrast. "Ruby" in the name refers to the ruby leaf margins, not the flower colour. See other flowering indoor plants.

What does the code PMP 176 mean?

PMP 176 is the breeder code assigned to the 'Puom Siam Ruby' hybrid for traceability. All plants under this code come from the same original genetic line — the cross of Hoya 'Joy' × Hoya 'Jennifer', developed in Thailand. See other rare collector Hoyas.

Why are the ruby margins not visible on the leaves?

The ruby margin pigmentation intensifies under strong indirect light. Under low light, the margins remain light green. Existing leaves do not regain pigmentation once lost, but new leaves will have accentuated margins. Use an airy, well-drained substrate.

How often should I water it?

Summer: water every 7-10 days; winter: every 14-20 days. Let the substrate dry 60-80% (top 2-3 cm) between waterings — thick waxy leaves retain water and the plant tolerates dryness better than over-watering.

Is it safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. The Hoya genus is considered non-toxic according to the ASPCA database, safe for cats, dogs, and children. The milky sap may cause minor skin irritation in sensitive individuals. See more child- and pet-friendly plants.
