🌿 A Living Painting from the Tropical Jungle

Ficus elastica 'Tineke' is one of the most spectacular variants of the rubber tree — a plant that appears to have been painted by an artist with a palette inspired by tropical sunsets. Its large, thick, glossy leaves display a fascinating variegation: the deep green centre fades to light green, then to broad cream-white margins, while young leaves add delicate pink tones at the base and along the central vein, creating a chromatic spectacle that renews itself with every new leaf.

Unlike many variegated plants that can seem fragile or capricious, 'Tineke' fully inherits the robustness and resilience of its parent species Ficus elastica — one of the toughest and most adaptable indoor trees. This combination of dramatic beauty and solid constitution makes 'Tineke' a favourite among both interior designers and plant collectors seeking maximum visual impact with minimal maintenance effort.

Each 'Tineke' specimen is unique: the proportion and distribution of colours varies from leaf to leaf and plant to plant, influenced by light quantity, temperature, and nutrients. It is a plant that evolves visually as it grows, each new leaf a chromatic surprise — sometimes greener, other times more cream, occasionally with more pronounced pink accents.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Ficus elastica was described by William Roxburgh in 1814. The epithet "elastica" refers to the elastic latex abundantly contained in all plant tissues — the same latex commercially exploited for natural rubber production before the development of Hevea brasiliensis plantations. The species belongs to the genus Ficus, family Moraceae.

In the wild, Ficus elastica is a massive tree reaching 30–40 metres in height, with impressive aerial roots and a vast crown. Its natural range extends from northeastern India through Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar to Sumatra and Java, where it grows in humid tropical forests at elevations up to 1,500 metres.

The 'Tineke' cultivar was obtained through selection of natural variegation mutations that occasionally occur in Ficus elastica populations. Propagation is exclusively vegetative — through cuttings and tissue culture — as variegation is not transmitted through seeds.

🌱 The Foliage

The leaves are the absolute glory of 'Tineke'. Each leaf can reach 20 to 30 centimetres in length and 10 to 15 centimetres in width, with the elliptical, thick, waxy form characteristic of the rubber tree. The texture is remarkable: thick, almost succulent, with a glossy upper surface that reflects light like an oil painting.

'Tineke' variegation follows a distinctive pattern: the leaf centre is deep green, transitioning gradually through light green and grey-green zones to broad cream-white or ivory margins. This transition is not abrupt but gradual, creating a watercolour effect. The central vein is prominent and may be pink, red, or cream, adding a central line of chromatic accent.

Young leaves are the most spectacular: they emerge from the pink sheath of the stipule protecting the buds, unfurling with intense salmon-pink tones at the base that gradually fade as the leaf matures. Each new leaf is thus a visual event — a few days of vibrant colours that then settle into the calmer palette of adult leaves.

🌸 The Flowers

Like other Ficus species, 'Tineke' produces flowers hidden in syconia — small spherical structures specific to the Moraceae family. Under indoor cultivation, flowering practically never occurs, and plants are grown exclusively for their decorative foliage. The absence of flowers diminishes nothing of this cultivar's attractiveness.

🌱 Growth Habit and Care

Ficus elastica 'Tineke' grows as a tree with a single, straight, robust stem from which large leaves develop in an alternate arrangement. Growth rate is moderate — 30–50 centimetres per year under good conditions — and the plant can reach 1.5–2 metres in large pots over several years. The habit is vertical and sculptural, making 'Tineke' an ideal "statement plant" for corners and spaces needing a dramatic vertical accent.

Branching can be stimulated by tip pruning — a recommended practice if a denser, bushier plant is desired rather than a single tall stem.

  • Light: Bright indirect light — essential for maintaining variegation. Insufficient light causes leaves to revert to uniform green, losing the cream. Tolerates morning direct sun.
  • Temperature: 18–28°C optimal. Not below 12°C. Heat tolerant but sensitive to cold.
  • Watering: Water when the top 3–5 cm of substrate have dried. Thick leaves store water, so moderate dryness is tolerated. Overwatering causes rot.
  • Humidity: 40–60%. Tolerates normal household humidity. Wiping leaves with a damp cloth maintains their sheen.
  • Substrate: Universal potting mix with excellent drainage. Perlite or bark added for aeration.
  • Fertilisation: Liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks spring–autumn. Pause in winter.
  • Propagation: Through stem cuttings with 1–2 leaves, in water or substrate. Air layering for mature specimens.
