🌿 Hoya 'Chouke' — The Quiet Elegance of a Rare Hoya

Some plants shout through color; others seduce slowly through detail. Hoya 'Chouke' belongs to the second category — a semi-succulent vine with thick waxy deep-green leaves. When the moment comes, the plant opens umbels of flowers fragrant with caramel sweetness.

'Chouke' belongs to the family of Hoyas selected for indoor cultivation — dense foliage, generous flowering and tolerance to apartment conditions.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

The Hoya genus (Apocynaceae) includes over 400 species from Southeast Asian tropical forests. Described in 1810 by Robert Brown, named after horticulturist Thomas Hoy. 'Chouke' is a modern selection from Philippine and Indonesian species at elevations of 100-1200 m.

🌱 The Foliage

Opposite oval leaves, 4-6 cm long, strongly waxy surface, deep green intensifying in strong light. The wax layer reduces water evaporation — a plant tolerant of dry apartment conditions.

🌸 The Flowers

Spherical umbels of 15-25 flowers, 7-10 mm each, cream-white with red-pink inner corona. Sweet caramel-like fragrance, more intense in evening. Blooms spring-autumn on perennial peduncles — DO NOT cut them.

🌱 Growth and Care

Semi-trailing habit, moderate growth (20-40 cm/year). At maturity 1-1.5 m. Propagation via cuttings 8-12 cm — roots in 3-5 weeks.

  • Light: Bright indirect, 15,000-25,000 lux.
  • Temperature: 18-28°C, 15-17°C autumn.
  • Watering: 7-10 days summer, 14-21 winter.
  • Humidity: 50-70%.
  • Substrate: 40% pine bark, 30% perlite, 20% sphagnum, 10% charcoal.
