🌿 Begonia amphioxus — The Miniature Jewel of Borneo's Jungle

Begonia amphioxus is a rare miniature species, discovered in 1985 by Ruth Kiew in northern Borneo's Sabah. Its dark-green leaves with intense burgundy spots on a lance-shaped form make it a desired collection piece in the rare begonia world. The name "amphioxus" means "sharp at both ends."

This is not a beginner's plant — high humidity requirements make it a piece for closed terrariums.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Endemic to Sabah state in northern Borneo (Malaysia), growing on humid limestone rocks of lower montane forests at elevations of 200-900 m. Belongs to section Petermannia of the Begoniaceae family (~1900 species).

🌱 The Foliage

Lance-elongated leaves, 5-8 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, with unique graphic shape. On the dark-green base, circular burgundy spots (1-3 mm) are distributed. On the underside, leaves are entirely deep red. In insufficient light, spot intensity decreases.

🌸 The Flowers

Small flowers (5-8 mm), white or pale pink, in short clusters. Flowering rare in apartments. The species' attraction lies in the foliage.

🌱 Growth and Care

Slow growth — 5-10 cm/year. At maturity remains compact (20-25 cm). Propagation via stem cuttings, but difficult (50-70% success).

  • Light: Moderate indirect, 5,000-12,000 lux.
  • Temperature: 18-25°C constant.
  • Watering: Every 4-6 days summer. NEVER stagnant.
  • Humidity: 70-85% — essential. Terrarium MANDATORY.
  • Substrate: Slightly acidic airy: 40% peat/coco, 25% perlite, 15% bark, 10% sphagnum.

On Eufloria, part of rare begonias. Use epiphyte substrate. Mildly toxic (calcium oxalate) — non-toxic alternatives.

Why are Begonia amphioxus leaves browning at the edges?

Edge browning indicates too low humidity. Begonia amphioxus requires minimum 70% constant humidity - in typical apartments (40-50%) leaves brown. Solutions: closed terrarium, plant cabinet with humidifier, or grouping with other tropical plants. Mist daily with filtered water.

How do you water Begonia amphioxus?

Water every 4-6 days in summer, every 7-10 days in winter, when the top 1-2 cm of substrate has dried. NEVER standing water - roots rot rapidly. Use filtered or distilled water (sensitive to chlorine and fluoride). Avoid overhead watering - risk of fungal Botrytis spots under high-humidity conditions.

Is Begonia amphioxus toxic to pets?

Yes, according to ASPCA, the Begonia genus is mildly toxic to dogs, cats and horses due to soluble calcium oxalate crystals. Ingestion symptoms: excessive drooling, oral irritation, mild vomiting. Place plant out of pets' reach. See alternatives in cat-safe plants.

How do I propagate Begonia amphioxus?

Propagation is via stem cuttings 5-8 cm with 2-3 leaves, or leaf cuttings (more difficult). Plant in moist perlite + sphagnum mix (1:1), at 22-25°C and 80% humidity. Roots appear in 4-6 weeks. One of the more difficult begonias to propagate - success rate 50-70%.

Is Begonia amphioxus suitable for beginners?

No. Begonia amphioxus is an advanced collector's species due to extreme humidity requirements (70-85%), hydric stress sensitivity and slow growth. Requires closed terrarium or plant cabinet. For beginners, we recommend more tolerant species from our beginner collection.
