Begonia amphioxus is a rare miniature species, discovered in 1985 by Ruth Kiew in northern Borneo's Sabah. Its dark-green leaves with intense burgundy spots on a lance-shaped form make it a desired collection piece in the rare begonia world. The name "amphioxus" means "sharp at both ends."
This is not a beginner's plant — high humidity requirements make it a piece for closed terrariums.
Endemic to Sabah state in northern Borneo (Malaysia), growing on humid limestone rocks of lower montane forests at elevations of 200-900 m. Belongs to section Petermannia of the Begoniaceae family (~1900 species).
Lance-elongated leaves, 5-8 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, with unique graphic shape. On the dark-green base, circular burgundy spots (1-3 mm) are distributed. On the underside, leaves are entirely deep red. In insufficient light, spot intensity decreases.
Small flowers (5-8 mm), white or pale pink, in short clusters. Flowering rare in apartments. The species' attraction lies in the foliage.
Slow growth — 5-10 cm/year. At maturity remains compact (20-25 cm). Propagation via stem cuttings, but difficult (50-70% success).
On Eufloria, part of rare begonias. Use epiphyte substrate. Mildly toxic (calcium oxalate) — non-toxic alternatives.
