Toxicity: Philodendron spiritus-sancti contains insoluble calcium oxalates (raphides) present in all parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and roots. When plant tissue is damaged (chewed, crushed, or broken), these microscopic needle-shaped crystals are released and can penetrate the soft tissues of the mouth, throat, and skin.

Possible symptoms: Oral irritation and intense burning sensation of the lips, tongue, and throat; excessive drooling and difficulty swallowing; swelling of the oral tissues; in pets, pawing at the mouth, vocalization, and refusal to eat. Skin contact with sap may cause mild dermatitis in sensitive individuals.

Important context: Toxicity is classified as moderate. Ingestion of significant quantities is rare because the immediate burning sensation typically deters further consumption. Severe systemic reactions are uncommon but possible in small pets or children who ingest larger amounts.

Safety advice: Place the plant out of reach of small children and curious pets. Wear gloves when pruning, propagating, or repotting. Wash hands thoroughly after handling the plant. If ingestion occurs, rinse the mouth with water and seek medical or veterinary attention if symptoms persist.
