🌿 Chlorophytum 'Irish' — The Elegant Simplicity of Unmatched Deep Green

Chlorophytum 'Irish' is the spider plant in its most elegant form — uniformly deep dark green, without the cream stripes of variegated varieties. Unlike them, 'Irish' retains its full photosynthetic capacity and tolerates low light better.

According to the NASA Clean Air Study, Chlorophytum plants are among the most efficient at indoor air purification. One of the least demanding indoor plants in the world.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

The type species Chlorophytum comosum was described in 1794 by Carl Peter Thunberg. The genus (~200 species) is native to tropical Africa. Natural habitat: humid forests of South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe. The 'Irish' cultivar is a natural mutation stabilized in Europe in the 1990s.

🌱 The Foliage

Linear elongated leaves, 25-35 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, arranged in a dense rosette. Uniformly deep dark-green color. Maximum chlorophyll content — efficient photosynthesis even in low light. Leaves absorb volatile organic compounds from air.

🌸 The Flowers

Small flowers (8-10 mm), white, star-shaped, on long stolons (60-90 cm). On the stolons, plantlets (offsets) with their own roots form, easily propagated.

🌱 Growth and Care

Fast growth, mature in 2-3 years from seeds or 6-12 months from offsets. At maturity: rosette 30-45 cm tall and 40-60 cm wide. Extremely simple propagation — ideal for beginners.

  • Light: Very flexible, 1,000-25,000 lux. Tolerates north exposure.
  • Temperature: 15-25°C. Tolerates 7-32°C.
  • Watering: 5-7 days summer, 10-14 winter. Filtered water.
  • Humidity: 30-80%. Tolerates dry air.
  • Substrate: Universal + perlite: 60% universal, 25% perlite, 15% humus.

On Eufloria, one of the most recommended beginner plants. Part of air-purifying plants collection. Non-toxic — safe for cats and dogs.

How often should I water Chlorophytum 'Irish'?

Chlorophytum 'Irish' should be watered every 5-7 days in summer, every 10-14 days in winter when the top 2-3 cm of substrate has dried. Tolerates short drying periods due to thickened fascicled roots. Use filtered or 24h sit-water - sensitive to chlorine (leaf tips brown).

Why are my Chlorophytum leaf tips browning?

Tip browning has 3 causes: (1) chlorinated/fluoridated water - use filtered or sit-water; (2) overwatering; (3) humidity below 25%. The most common is treated water. Switch water and problems resolve in 2-3 months with new leaves.

Is Chlorophytum 'Irish' safe for cats and dogs?

Yes! According to ASPCA, Chlorophytum comosum is non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses - one of the safest indoor plants. It belongs to cat-safe plants. Cats are often attracted to the long leaves - place at a safe height to avoid aesthetic damage.

How do I propagate Chlorophytum 'Irish'?

Propagation is extremely simple via: (1) plantlets (offsets) appearing on stolons - cut and plant in moist substrate or water, roots appear in 1-2 weeks; (2) clump division at repotting. One of the easiest indoor plants to propagate - perfect for beginners.

What's the difference between Chlorophytum 'Irish' and the variegated variety?

Chlorophytum 'Irish' is uniformly green, without the white or cream stripes of 'Vittatum' or 'Variegatum' variants. More tolerant of low light (more chlorophyll), grows denser and doesn't lose color when moved. Both are efficient air purifiers according to NASA Clean Air Study.
