Hoya carnosa 'Stardust' is a commercial selection with silver-white splash variegation, derived from the species Hoya carnosa (R.Br.) — one of the most iconic indoor plants of the Apocynaceae family. The base species is native to southern China, Laos, Japan (southern Kyushu), and Taiwan, and the 'Stardust' cultivar was selected for its characteristic pattern of fine silver speckles dispersed across the entire leaf surface — appearance evoking a starry sky (hence the name). It is part of our Hoya collection.
Our specimen comes in a Ø10.5cm nursery pot, perfect to be moved into a decorative ceramic pot of the same size.
Hoya carnosa is one of the oldest Hoyas introduced into European cultivation, with over 200 years of history. The 'Stardust' cultivar is a recent commercial selection, explicitly described as a selection from authentic Hoya carnosa (not a hybrid). It is not officially registered with the International Cultivar Registration Authority for Hoya but circulates in international trade under this "trade name" designation.
Unlike Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' (marginal white-pink variegation on the edges) or the 'Krimson Princess' variant (central cream-white variegation), 'Stardust' has no structural variegation on the margins or centre — but rather a uniformly dispersed splash pattern, characteristic of the "splash carnosa" group.
The leaves of Hoya carnosa 'Stardust' are oval, thick, waxy, with semi-succulent texture typical of the mother species. The base colour is deep green, and the main diagnostic feature is the fine silver-white speckles apparently randomly dispersed across the entire lamina surface, like a starry sky — a pattern called "splash" in Hoya collector terminology. Splash intensity varies from leaf to leaf and is more pronounced under strong indirect light.
An appreciated ornamental trait: new leaves emerge in burgundy shades, then mature gradually toward deep green with accentuated silver splash. The stems are voluble, with adventitious roots — in cultivation the plant adopts a mixed climbing-trailing habit, ideal for hanging pots, macramé, or moss poles.
One of the most appreciated traits of the mother species, retained fully in the cultivar, is the generous flowering in compact umbels. The flowers are small (~1.3 cm in diameter), star-shaped, waxy, cream-white with a central corona showing a pink accent, arranged in umbels of 10-50 flowers. The scent is sweet, perceptible mainly in the evening and at night.
The flowering cycle repeats on the same perennial peduncles ("spurs") — which is why you must never break off dried inflorescences. Constant strong indirect light and an airy substrate are key for regular floral induction. See more flowering indoor plants.
The Hoya genus is considered non-toxic according to the ASPCA database, being safe for dogs, cats, and children. The milky sap, common in the Apocynaceae family, may cause minor skin irritation in very sensitive individuals — a pair of gloves is enough at repotting. Hoya carnosa 'Stardust' is thus featured among our child- and pet-friendly plants.
It is the perfect combination between the most accessible Hoya species (carnosa — the classic "wax plant" cultivated for generations) and a modern, appreciated ornamental pattern (dispersed silver splash). The cultivation requirements are the friendliest in the Hoya genus — perfect both for beginners and for collectors who want to add a splash cultivar to their set. It integrates beautifully into the rare Hoya collection and is a solid option for easy-care plants with visual impact.
