Hoya krohniana ‘Eskimo’ is a miniature jewel of the botanical world, a plant that proves beauty often comes in small packages. Its tiny, perfectly heart-shaped leaves — like little vegetal hearts — are dotted with silver splashes that shimmer like snowflakes on a dark green background. This unique silver pattern earned it the name ‘Eskimo’, evoking the frozen landscapes of the Arctic in a tropical plant.

This miniature Hoya is native to the Philippines, where it grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks in humid tropical forests. In cultivation, it is prized for its compact, elegant habit, with thin stems that twine delicately, creating a cascade of silver hearts. It is the kind of plant that captivates instantly through its delicacy and quickly becomes any Hoya collector’s favourite.

Offered in 6 cm pots, the plant already has multiple stems with mature leaves, displaying the characteristic silver pattern from the start.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Hoya krohniana was described by Kloppenburg and Siar in 1999, dedicated to David Krohn, a passionate Hoya collector and cultivator from the United States who significantly contributed to spreading rare species in culture. The species is endemic to the Philippines, growing in humid tropical hill forests at altitudes of 200-800 metres.

The ‘Eskimo’ form is a cultivar selected for the particularly intense silver splash on its leaves. While the type species has moderate splash, ‘Eskimo’ stands out through extensive silver coverage that can comprise 40-70% of the leaf surface. The pattern is genetically stable and transmits through vegetative propagation.

Hoya krohniana belongs to section Acanthostemma and is related to Hoya lacunosa, sharing small leaf size and compact habit. The Philippines hosts over 100 endemic Hoya species, making it one of the most important diversity centres for the genus.

🌱 The Foliage

The leaves of Hoya krohniana ‘Eskimo’ are miniature and extraordinarily expressive. Each leaf measures just 1.5-3 cm in length and 1-2 cm in width, with a perfectly cordate (heart-shaped) form and a slightly pointed tip. The texture is thick, succulent, firm to the touch, with a slightly waxy surface that reflects light.

The base colour is dark green, but what makes ‘Eskimo’ special is the silver splash covering much of the leaf surface. The silver spots are randomly distributed, creating a unique effect on each leaf — no two leaves are perfectly alike. In natural light, the splash gleams with metallic reflections, giving the plant a fairy-tale appearance.

Leaves are arranged oppositely on short stems, creating a chain of silver hearts effect. New leaves emerge with a pink tint that gradually transforms into green with silver splash as the leaf matures.

🌸 The Flowers

The flowers of Hoya krohniana ‘Eskimo’ are as delicate as the foliage. Umbels contain 15-25 tiny flowers, approximately 0.5-0.8 cm in diameter, cream-white with a pale yellow centre. The petal texture is waxy, lustrous, with slightly reflexed margins.

The fragrance is a true sensory event — sweet, intense, with notes of vanilla and caramel, intensifying significantly in the evening and nighttime hours. Due to the plant’s small size, the fragrance is surprisingly powerful relative to the flower size. Peduncles are permanent and should never be cut. Flowering period: spring through autumn, with possibility of successive reblooms.

🌱 Growth Habit and Development

Hoya krohniana ‘Eskimo’ has a compact habit with thin, flexible stems that grow relatively quickly for a small-sized plant. In optimal conditions, it can add 20-40 cm of new stem per season. Ideal in a hanging basket or on a small trellis where the cascade of heart-shaped leaves can be admired.

Compared to other miniature Hoyas, krohniana ‘Eskimo’ is surprisingly robust and tolerant. It adapts well to apartment conditions and does not require excessively demanding care.

Care requirements:

• Light: Bright, indirect light. East or west-facing window. Sufficient light intensifies the silver splash.
• Temperature: Optimal 18-28°C. Minimum 12°C. Tolerates normal apartment temperatures well.
• Watering: Moderate — allow substrate to dry almost completely. Succulent leaves retain water, so less is better than more.
• Humidity: 50-70%. Appreciates higher humidity but adapts to 40% as well.
• Substrate: Very airy mix: pine bark, perlite, sphagnum moss. Excellent drainage essential.
• Fertilisation: Liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength, monthly during growing season.
• Propagation: By stem cuttings with 2-3 nodes. Roots easily in moist sphagnum moss.
