🌅 Hoya 'Sunrise' – leaves that change color like a painted canvas

General description

  • Color-changing foliage: Glossy, tear-drop shaped leaves that transform into vibrant red-burgundy, violet, or orange under bright light, with visible light-green veins creating a dramatic contrast.
  • Fragrant creamy flowers: After 1-2 years of care, produces clusters of small star-shaped flowers in cream-yellow or pale pink, with a sweet fragrance reminiscent of chocolate or ice cream, especially in the evening.
  • Vining growth habit: Grows as a climbing vine reaching 1-2 meters, ideal for hanging baskets or decorative supports where it can trail beautifully.

How to care for Hoya 'Sunrise'

  • Light: Prefers bright indirect light, ideal 1-2 meters from an east- or west-facing window. For "sun stress" (red coloration), gradually expose to 1-2 hours of direct morning sun, avoiding harsh afternoon sunlight.
  • Watering: Water every 10-14 days when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Use a pot with good drainage to prevent water accumulation.
  • Humidity: Tolerates household humidity (40-50%), but prefers 50-60%. A humidifier or pebble tray with water helps.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining epiphyte mix with bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir.
  • Temperature: Thrives between 18–28°C with moderate humidity to keep foliage healthy.

You can contact us via WhatsApp or by phone to receive photos of the available specimens before shipping.

Does it have flowers?

Most of the Hoya plants we sell are not in bloom when shipped. However, they can bloom under the right light, temperature, and humidity conditions. Hoya 'Sunrise' typically blooms after 1-2 years of proper care and can rebloom multiple times per year.
Check the "Flowering stage" for each product to see whether the plant is:
- Without flowers
- With formed peduncles
- With flowers

Hoya 'Sunrise' flowers typically last between 5 and 7 days after opening, sometimes up to ten days if the environment is stable (no drafts and consistent temperature).

After the flowers fade, do not cut the peduncles, as they can produce new inflorescences in subsequent seasons.

Blooming period
- Under ideal light and temperature conditions, Hoya 'Sunrise' can bloom multiple times a year once mature, more frequently in late spring and summer (May–August).
- In indoor environments with adequate artificial light (12+ hours daily), flowering can even occur outside the natural season, for example in winter.

Flower description
- The flowers are small, star-shaped, cream-yellow to pale pink with a darker center, grouped in umbels.
- They form on permanent peduncles, so do not remove them after blooming.
- Each umbel typically contains 10-20 individual flowers.

Fragrance of the flowers
- The scent is medium to strong, more intense in the evening and at night.
- The aroma is sweet-floral, with notes of chocolate, vanilla, or ice cream, characteristic of its Hoya lacunosa parentage.

How can I get the best red coloration?

The signature red-burgundy coloration of 'Sunrise' comes from "sun stress." To maximize color:
1. Provide very bright indirect light – minimum 6-8 hours daily
2. Allow 1-2 hours of gentle direct morning sun
3. Gradually acclimate to brighter conditions over 2-3 weeks
4. Slightly reduce watering frequency (mild drought stress enhances color)
5. New leaves show the most intense coloration
6. Avoid moving the plant once positioned – consistency is key

Is my Hoya 'Sunrise' supposed to trail or climb?

Hoya 'Sunrise' is naturally a vining plant that can both trail and climb:
- For trailing: Allow vines to cascade from hanging baskets or high shelves
- For climbing: Provide a trellis, moss pole, or other support
- Mixed approach: Train some vines to climb while letting others trail
The choice is purely aesthetic – the plant will thrive either way!

To encourage reblooming of Hoya 'Sunrise', follow these essential tips:
1. Do not cut the flower peduncles – they are permanent and can produce new flowers multiple times. Even if partially dried, keep them.
2. Provide strong and consistent light – at least 10–12 hours per day. Ideally, place the plant near an east- or west-facing window. In the cold season, you can use a LED grow light.
3. Avoid moving the plant – after peduncles appear, changing its position or light angle can stop flower development.
4. Use appropriate fertilizer – apply a balanced indoor plant fertilizer (e.g., NPK 10-10-10) during growth, and switch to a phosphorus-rich one (e.g., 10-30-20) when buds form.
5. Maintain temperatures between 22–28°C by day and above 18°C by night – sudden changes can stop bud formation.
6. Water moderately – let the substrate dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can inhibit flowering.
7. Ensure ambient humidity of 50–60% – if the air is too dry, buds may drop before opening.
8. Be patient – first blooming typically occurs after 1-2 years of growth.

Is it toxic for pets or children?

Hoya 'Sunrise' is considered non-toxic to humans and pets, making it safe for homes with cats or dogs. However, as with all plants:
- Avoid ingesting leaves or stems
- Wash hands after handling, especially if pruning or repotting
- Keep out of reach of small children who may be tempted to taste plants
- While generally safe, ingestion may cause mild digestive discomfort

This hoya does not contain the irritating latex found in many other Hoya species, making it one of the safer varieties for homes with curious pets.

Where should I place it indoors for best results?

Ideally 1-2 meters from an east- or west-facing window with bright indirect light. For enhanced red coloration, position where it receives 1-2 hours of gentle morning sun. Avoid south-facing windows with harsh afternoon sun. Once positioned and showing good growth or coloration, avoid moving it unnecessarily.
