🌿 The Wax Ivy — A Variegated Jewel from Natal

Senecio macroglossus 'Variegatus' is one of the most elegant surprises the world of succulents has to offer. Known as wax ivy or Natal ivy, this twining plant combines the classic appearance of common ivy with the resilience of succulents. The leaves have that same triangular, lobed shape but are thick, fleshy, with a waxy texture that gleams in the light.

The 'Variegatus' variety adds a spectacular chromatic dimension. Each leaf has a deep-green centre framed by broad margins of cream to golden-yellow, sometimes developing delicate pink hues in strong light.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Senecio macroglossus belongs to the genus Senecio, one of the largest genera in Asteraceae, with over 1,000 species. First described by William Henry Harvey in Flora Capensis (1865), from Natal province, South Africa. Natural habitat extends along the eastern coast of South Africa into Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
