There are plants that whisper, and there are plants that make a statement. Strelitzia reginae belongs firmly in the second category. Known worldwide as the Bird of Paradise, this South African native has been captivating gardeners, artists, and interior designers for over two centuries with its bold, architectural form and striking tropical presence. In indoor culture, Strelitzia reginae has established itself as one of the most elegant choices for bright spaces — a single specimen that instantly transforms any corner into a tropical sanctuary.
The specimen we offer comes in a 12 cm nursery pot with several well-formed mature leaves. It is a young but vigorous plant with a robust root system — characteristic of the Strelitzia genus, which develops thick, fleshy roots capable of storing water and nutrients. With proper care, this plant will grow steadily for years, becoming increasingly impressive with each passing season.
Strelitzia reginae was brought to Europe in the late 18th century when the British explorer Sir Joseph Banks sent specimens from the Cape of Good Hope to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The genus name 'Strelitzia' was chosen in honour of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III of Great Britain, who was a passionate botanist. The species epithet 'reginae' means 'of the queen' in Latin — a truly regal plant in every respect.
Strelitzia reginae is endemic to South Africa, where it grows naturally in the coastal regions of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. In its native habitat, it forms dense clumps on sunny slopes, often near watercourses. The subtropical climate of these regions — warm summers, mild winters, moderate rainfall — has shaped a remarkably adaptable plant.
Unlike many tropical plants that demand constant warmth and humidity, Strelitzia reginae evolved in a climate with genuine seasonal variation, making it surprisingly tolerant of suboptimal conditions. It can withstand brief drought periods (thanks to its fleshy roots that function as water reserves), tolerates wider temperature swings than most tropical houseplants, and adapts to various light levels, though it clearly prefers bright conditions.
The leaves are the plant's most distinctive feature in indoor culture. Each leaf grows on a long, rigid petiole of 40–80 cm, straight as a lance, with an oval-elongated blade at the tip. The leaf texture is leathery, almost plastic, with a prominent central midrib and a slightly waxy surface that repels water and dust. The colour is a deep, uniform green with subtle blue-grey undertones on the underside.
Strelitzia reginae is one of the hardiest tropical houseplants, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced collectors.
Light is the most critical factor. Strelitzia loves light — the more, the better. Position it near a south- or west-facing window for best results. It can tolerate direct sunlight (after an acclimatisation period), which sets it apart from many other houseplants. In insufficient light, growth slows dramatically and petioles elongate disproportionately as the plant searches for light.
Watering should be moderate. Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. In summer, this means roughly once a week; in winter, every 10–14 days. Strelitzia's fleshy roots are particularly sensitive to waterlogging — soggy substrate causes root rot faster than in most plants.
Temperature should ideally remain between 18–28°C. Strelitzia tolerates temperatures down to 5–10°C for short periods, making it suitable for balconies during warm months. It does not tolerate frost.
Soil must be well-draining. A mix of universal potting soil with perlite and coarse sand (2:1:1 ratio) works well. Repot every 2–3 years in spring. Note: Strelitzia roots are powerful and can crack plastic pots!
Feeding monthly during the growing season (April–September) with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in winter entirely.
While indoor flowering is rare (requiring mature plants of 5+ years, excellent light, and a winter cooling period), the Strelitzia reginae flower is one of the most spectacular in the plant kingdom. The horizontal boat-shaped spathe, green flushed with violet, supports vivid orange petals and electric blue sepals, forming a structure that strikingly resembles the head of a tropical bird in flight. This resemblance earned it the common name: Bird of Paradise.
Even without flowers, the decorative value of Strelitzia reginae is extraordinary. Its sculptural leaves, upright petioles, and overall form give it a minimalist-tropical aesthetic that few other plants can match. It is the ideal plant for modern interiors, commercial spaces, offices, and hotel lobbies — anywhere that calls for a dramatic green accent without occupying excessive floor space.

Strelitzia reginae prefers strong direct light, ideally at least 4-6 hours of sunlight per day. Water moderately, allowing the top layer of soil to dry between waterings. Use well-draining soil and fertilize monthly in spring and summer. Optimal temperature is 18-28°C, but tolerates down to 5°C for short periods.
Yes, Strelitzia reginae is considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs. The fruits and seeds contain substances that can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if ingested. Leaves may cause oral cavity irritation. It is recommended to place the plant away from pets.
Strelitzia reginae typically blooms in winter and early spring, producing spectacular bird-shaped flowers with orange and blue petals. The plant needs to be at least 4-5 years old and have reached a mature size to bloom. Abundant direct sunlight is essential for flowering.
Strelitzia reginae can be grown outdoors in summer but must be brought inside before the first frost. It does not tolerate temperatures below 5°C. In Romania, it is best grown as a houseplant or in pots on the terrace during summer, ensuring abundant direct light and wind protection.
Leaf splitting is a natural phenomenon in Strelitzia reginae. In nature, this helps the plant withstand strong winds by reducing the exposed surface area. Factors such as wind, frequent touching, low humidity, or air drafts can accelerate the process. It is not a sign of disease and does not affect the plant's health.
Strelitzia reginae can reach 1-1.5 m indoors. It has large, elegant banana-like leaves that bring a tropical feel to the space.
Use well-draining, nutrient-rich substrate. A mix of universal soil with perlite and compost is ideal. Ensure good drainage.
