Sarracenia x mitchelliana is a natural hybrid between S. leucophylla (white-spotted trumpets) and S. purpurea (short red-violet trumpets). Medium-sized vertical-erect trumpets, with red-cherry venation on white-green background. Tubular carnivorous plant from southeastern USA. Requires distilled water and cold winter rest.

Sarracenia x mitchelliana is a known natural hybrid between two southeastern American species: Sarracenia leucophylla (with white-spotted trumpets near the top) and Sarracenia purpurea (with short, wide trumpets in red-violet shades). The hybrid inherits characteristic features of both parents, offering medium-sized trumpets with red-cherry venation on a white-green or cream background. For carnivorous plant enthusiasts, this hybrid represents a remarkable collector's piece due to the rare combination of botanical characteristics and spectacular appearance. The hybrid was officially described in the 19th century and is found both naturally in habitats where the parents overlap, and as a result of controlled cultivation.
Sarracenia x mitchelliana belongs to the Sarraceniaceae family, native to the swamps of southeastern United States (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi). The hybrid is natural — wild populations are found where the habitat includes both Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia purpurea, allowing cross-pollination. In cultivation, the hybrid has been stabilized and produced through controlled manual pollination, offering plants with predictable characteristics.
The trumpets are the defining visual element — vertical-erect (trait inherited from leucophylla) but shorter and wider (trait from purpurea), reaching 15-25 cm at maturity. The trumpet surface displays white-green spots near the top (from leucophylla) with more pronounced red-cherry venation at the base (from purpurea). This visual combination makes the hybrid easily recognizable and very decorative.
The hood (operculum) at the trumpet tip functions as a roof against rain, preventing dilution of digestive juices. The exterior surface is glossy, attractive to insects, while the interior has a slippery waxy mucosa that prevents prey from escaping. Digestive enzymes at the trumpet base break down captured insects, releasing nutrients (especially nitrogen) for the plant.
The flowers, when they appear in spring, are large (5-7 cm), pendulous, in pink-burgundy shades with complex venation. Flower shape is characteristic — with a central "umbrella" that protects reproductive parts from self-pollen, ensuring cross-pollination with other Sarracenia.
Sarracenia x mitchelliana is a perennial plant with mandatory winter vegetative rest — in its natural habitat, temperate frosts (down to -10°C) trigger dormancy. In cultivation, this cold period is essential for the plant's long-term health. The hybrid inherits cold resistance from S. purpurea, being slightly more tolerant of low temperatures than pure S. leucophylla.
Sarracenia x mitchelliana is a "collector's piece" for carnivorous plant enthusiasts — combining the visual elegance of S. leucophylla with the resistance and more compact form of S. purpurea. For carnivorous plant lovers who want a single representative piece for the Sarracenia genus, this hybrid offers "best of both worlds" — appreciated traits of both parent species in a single plant.
In carnivorous plant collections, mitchelliana pairs excellently with other Sarracenia hybrids and species, plus other carnivores — Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap), Drosera (sundew), Pinguicula. A "carnivorous garden" in an open terrarium or paludarium creates a unique atmosphere, similar to the swampy forests of the natural habitat. See terrarium plants for completion.
Sarracenia x mitchelliana requires specialized care, similar to other Sarracenia, but with slightly greater resistance to lower temperatures:
Light: Intense direct sun, essential for red-cherry pigmentation. Under low light, the plant grows green without the characteristic pigmentation. Best exposure: south-facing window with 6+ hours of direct sun or sunny balcony. In summer, direct sun intensifies venation coloration.
Watering: With distilled, demineralized, or rainwater ALWAYS. Tap water (with limescale and chlorine) is lethal to Sarracenia! Substrate must be permanently moist, but not soaked. Use the "tray watering" method — place pot in a tray with 1-2 cm water, plant absorbs what it needs. In winter, reduce water to minimum.
Humidity: 50-80% optimal, higher during active growth. In dry apartments, grouping with other plants or terrarium cultivation maintains humidity. DO NOT mist directly on leaves — stagnant water in trumpets can cause rot.
Substrate: SPECIAL — never universal substrate! Sarracenia mix: 50% chopped sphagnum, 30% perlite, 20% clean silica sand. DO NOT add compost or any fertilizer — Sarracenia obtains nutrients from insects.
Temperature: 15-30°C in growing season, MANDATORY 0-10°C in winter for 3-4 months rest. Mitchelliana tolerates lower temperatures slightly better than pure S. leucophylla (down to -8°C briefly). Without cold period, the plant dies in 2-3 years.
Feeding: In natural habitat, Sarracenia captures insects on its own. Indoors, if no insects fly, occasionally you can "feed" trumpets with 1-2 dead flies or fish larvae (every 4-6 weeks). DO NOT use raw or processed meat — it rots.
Repotting: Every 2-3 years, in spring, in fresh Sarracenia substrate. Check rhizome for rotted parts and cut with disinfected knife.
Pruning: Remove dried or discolored trumpets in spring. Mature plants can have 10-20 trumpets simultaneously.
Common problems: Trumpets without red pigmentation = insufficient light. Soft/rotted trumpets = watering with limescale water (FATAL). Yellow leaves = lack of winter rest. Spider mites appear in very dry air.
Sarracenia x mitchelliana is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and children — it does not appear on the ASPCA toxic plant list. This makes it a safe choice for households with curious pets or young children, falling into the category of family-friendly plants. However, avoid ingestion — no botanical ornament is intended for consumption.
The digestive fluid in trumpets contains slightly irritating enzymes, but they are not dangerous for normal skin contact. Wash hands after handling. For very young children, place the plant in an inaccessible location to prevent curiosity to explore trumpets with fingers.
Sarracenia x mitchelliana is a "complete botanical experience" — combining the exoticism of carnivorous plants with a unique visual character inherited from two remarkable parents. For lovers of unusual plants with educational character (you can observe natural hybridization in action), mitchelliana offers a natural focal point in any botanical collection, distinguishing itself from all traditional indoor plants.
The Ø8.5cm diameter allows a stable start with already established roots in adequate Sarracenia substrate. During growing season, the plant will produce new trumpets with characteristic red-cherry venation on white-green background. For open terrarium or paludarium enthusiasts, mitchelliana is a spectacular centerpiece.
For carnivorous plant lovers, mitchelliana perfectly completes a collection alongside Dionaea muscipula, other Sarracenia, Drosera, Pinguicula. The terrarium composition with multiple carnivores creates a miniature "swampy ecosystem." See terrarium plants.
