Sansevieria 'Digitorum' — rare sansevieria cultivar with short, thick cylindrical leaves grouped densely like fingers, in green-gray tones with silver reflections. Extremely drought-resistant plant, ideal for fans of low-maintenance plants with sculptural visual impact.
Approx height (including pot): 65 cm
Sansevieria 'Digitorum' is a rare and distinctive cultivar from the Sansevieria family (now reclassified as Dracaena), recognized instantly by its short, thick cylindrical leaves grouped densely like fingers rising from the pot. Unlike the classic Sansevieria trifasciata (with flat, tall "mother-in-law's tongue" leaves), 'Digitorum' is compact, low (15–25 cm), and has a distinctive, almost architectural sculptural appearance.
Leaves are green-gray with subtle silver reflections and fine horizontal bands, more pronounced in strong light. The cultivar originates in West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast), where the wild plant grows in semi-arid areas. For lovers of similar plants, see the Sansevieria collection on Eufloria or other succulent plants.
'Digitorum' combines the greatest qualities of the Sansevieria genus — legendary tolerance to neglect and air-purifying ability — with a distinctive visual design that breaks the routine of the "mother-in-law's tongue" sansevieria. It is the perfect choice for someone who wants a sculptural plant but doesn't want to give it intensive care. Drought tolerance is excellent: it can survive 3–4 weeks without water in normal conditions, and forgetting to water it doesn't kill it — overwatering does!
NASA Clean Air studies (1989) showed that Sansevieria filters formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and trichloroethylene from the air, making it excellent for the bedroom (it releases oxygen at night, unlike most plants). For an office or workspace, see our suggestions in office plants.
Ideal light is bright indirect, but 'Digitorum' tolerates a wide spectrum — from moderate sun (south-east windowsill) to bright shade (near a north window). In constant direct sun, leaves may turn yellow-bronze; in too little light, they grow more slowly and lose the silvery color. Preferred temperature is 18–30°C; tolerates 10°C in winter, but not below 5°C.
Watering is the most delicate point — paradoxically, by watering TOO MUCH. In summer, water every 2–3 weeks, only when the substrate is completely dry. In winter, every 4–6 weeks. Stagnant water at the bottom of the pot rots the cylindrical roots within days. The substrate must be very airy — use cactus and succulent substrate, or add 30–50% perlite to a universal substrate. See airy substrate.
Fertilize only in spring-summer, every 6–8 weeks, with cactus/succulent fertilizer diluted to half. In winter, do NOT fertilize — the plant enters dormancy and fertilizer harms it. Repot only every 3–4 years, when the pot becomes too small.
The most common problems of Sansevieria 'Digitorum' are: root rot (cause: overwatering, poorly drained substrate — solution: let the substrate dry completely between waterings, ensure good drainage), soft or wrinkled leaves (paradoxical cause: can be both chronic dehydration and rot — check the substrate and roots), brown spots on leaves (cause: frost, hard water, or sunburn after much shade).
Mealybugs (white scales) and red spider mites may appear in dry winter environment. Treat with neem oil or 70% diluted isopropyl alcohol. For other resistant plants with similar care, see other succulent plants and cacti.
Sansevieria 'Digitorum' is ideal for: absolute beginners in the plant world (hard to kill), people who travel often and forget to water (3–4 weeks without water = no problem), offices with moderate light and air conditioning, the bedroom (releases oxygen at night, purifies the air). See suggestions for office plants or gifts for special occasions.
NOT suitable for: homes with cats or dogs that chew plants (the plant is toxic — see the Safety section), very young children who may break the cylindrical leaves and put them in their mouths.
