🌿 Maranta leuconeura — the prayer plant with decorative foliage

Maranta leuconeura, popularly known as the "prayer plant", is one of the most beloved indoor plants thanks to its spectacular foliage and unique behaviour — the leaves rise in the evening, as in prayer, and spread out again in the morning. This phenomenon, called nyctinasty, is triggered by changes in light and makes Maranta a plant that is always in motion, perfect for those who want a living connection with their plants.

The leaves are opulent, oval, with an impressive natural design: a light green central vein flanked by symmetrical patches on a dark green background with purple undertones. The underside of the leaf is usually a deep purple, offering a stunning contrast when the plant rises in the evening. Growth is modest, the plant remaining compact, ideal for 6-12 cm pots.

🌍 Origin and history of cultivation

Maranta leuconeura is native to the tropical forests of Brazil, where it grows in the shade of tall trees on soil rich in organic matter. Its natural habitat offers high humidity (80-95%), steady temperatures between 20-28°C and filtered light. These conditions make it a plant with specific cultivation requirements, but absolutely spectacular when properly cared for.

It was brought to Europe in the 19th century and quickly became a Victorian parlour plant, appreciated in the greenhouses of the aristocracy. The genus name "Maranta" honours the 16th century Italian physician and botanist Bartolomeo Maranta. The Marantaceae family includes over 500 species, many with decorative foliage and similar nyctinastic movements.

🌱 The foliage and nyctinastic movement

Maranta leuconeura leaves reach 10-15 cm in length and 6-10 cm in width, with a fine velvety texture. The variegation pattern includes shades of dark and light green, symmetrical patches like fingers or feathers, and prominent veins in pink, red or silver — depending on the cultivar. The most popular cultivars are "Erythroneura" (with red veins) and "Kerchoveana" (with dark patches on light green).

The nyctinastic movement is one of the most fascinating features of the plant. In the evening, when the light fades, the leaves rise vertically, side by side, like hands in prayer. In the morning, when light returns, the leaves spread back horizontally. This movement is controlled by a specialised tissue at the base of each petiole called the pulvinus, which changes shape through the migration of water between cells.

🌸 The small, discreet flowers

Although it is grown mainly for the foliage, Maranta leuconeura can bloom under good conditions. The flowers are small (under 1 cm), white or slightly pink, similar to small orchids, grouped in small inflorescences above the foliage. They are not fragrant, but they add a discreet charm to the overall look of the plant. Flowering usually appears in spring and summer, when the plant is mature and properly cared for.

The flowers are not the main attraction of the plant and some growers prefer to remove them to redirect the plant's energy towards new leaves. This decision is personal, but if you want to see the plant in all its splendour, let the inflorescences develop naturally.

For those who want to see all three main cultivars of Maranta leuconeura, the collection can include "Erythroneura" (Fascinator) with electric red veins, "Kerchoveana" with dark patches on pale green and "Massangeana" with metallic silver on the main veins. Each has a different personality and together they form a remarkable decorative group. All three cultivars have the same care requirements and can be grown together.

A common pitfall in caring for Maranta leuconeura is using hard or chlorinated tap water. This water leaves brown streaks on the tips and edges of the leaves, gradually destroying the decorative appearance. Always use distilled water, rainwater or tap water left for 24 hours in an open container to allow the chlorine to evaporate.

Watering frequency is an art with Maranta — the soil should be neither too dry nor too wet. Check the top layer with your finger: when the first 1-2 cm are almost dry, it is time to water again. In the warm season this may mean watering every 3-5 days; in winter, every 7-10 days. Never let water pool in the saucer under the pot.

Maranta leuconeura is a pet-safe plant — it is non-toxic for cats, dogs or small children, according to the ASPCA list. It is one of the few truly pet-safe houseplants, which makes it popular in homes with animals. This characteristic, combined with its beauty, makes it an ideal choice for families.

Propagation by division is done in spring, when the plant is being repotted. Carefully remove the plant from the pot, separate sections with well-developed roots and 3-5 leaves, then plant them in individual pots. Water generously after planting and maintain high humidity for the first 2 weeks to stimulate the development of new roots. Stem cuttings are harder to root than other plants and require damp sphagnum and temperatures above 22°C.

In recent years, prayer plants have made a strong comeback in interior design trends thanks to their natural beauty and fascinating behaviour. They are frequently seen in modern interior photography, on shelves alongside Calathea, Stromanthe and Ctenanthe, forming spectacular groups of plants with decorative foliage. Maranta leuconeura is usually the centre of attention thanks to the strong contrast between the green background and the coloured veins.

The ideal location in the home is a bright bathroom with a window, where the naturally higher humidity simulates the conditions of the tropical forest. Alternatively, a bright kitchen can also be good, as long as you avoid direct exposure to stoves or ovens. To maximise humidity, group several plants together — their combined effect creates a more humid microclimate in which all of them thrive.

Common problems include leaf curl (usually low humidity), brown leaf tips (chlorinated water or dry air), yellowing leaves (overwatering or root rot) and faded patterns (too much direct light). Maranta is relatively pest-resistant but spider mites can become a problem in dry conditions — increase humidity and inspect the underside of leaves regularly. Mealybugs may also appear and can be removed with a cotton swab dipped in 50% isopropyl alcohol.

🌱 Complete care and growth habits

Maranta leuconeura prefers medium to low indirect light — never direct sun, which quickly burns the leaves and bleaches the pattern. A north or east window is ideal. The substrate must be airy but moisture-retentive: a mix of peat, perlite and a little fine bark. Water when the top layer of soil starts to dry out, but do not allow the roots to dry out completely.

Atmospheric humidity is critical — minimum 50%, ideally 60-70%. Use a humidifier, mist the leaves daily with distilled or rainwater (tap water contains chlorine that stains the leaves) or place the pot on a tray with pebbles and water. Ideal temperature: 18-25°C; it does not tolerate below 16°C. Fertilise with fertiliser diluted to half strength every 2 weeks during the growing season. Repot annually in spring. Propagation is easy through division or stem cuttings in water. Delivery across the EU.

Why does Maranta leuconeura move its leaves at night?

Maranta leuconeura raises its leaves in the evening through a phenomenon called nyctinasty, controlled by a motor organ (pulvinus) at the leaf base. Leaves close vertically in the evening in response to decreasing light and open horizontally in the morning. This movement protects leaves from nocturnal cooling.

Is Maranta leuconeura toxic to cats or dogs?

No, Maranta leuconeura is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to ASPCA. It is one of the safest decorative plants for households with pets, an excellent alternative to toxic plants like Dieffenbachia or Philodendron.

Why does my Maranta have brown leaf tips?

Brown tips are caused by low air humidity (below 40%), water with chlorine or fluoride, or irregular watering. Use filtered water, maintain humidity at 50-70% through regular misting, and avoid cold air drafts. Reduce fertilization if excessive.

How often should I water Maranta leuconeura?

Water Maranta leuconeura when the top 2-3 cm of substrate has dried — approximately once every 5-7 days in summer and 10-14 days in winter. Use filtered water or water left for 24 hours, as the plant is sensitive to chlorine and fluoride in tap water.

Does Maranta leuconeura need a lot of light?

Maranta leuconeura prefers moderate indirect light and tolerates partial shade well. Avoid direct sunlight which causes discoloration and leaf burns. It is ideal for spaces with diffused light, 1-2 meters from an east or north-facing window.
