🌿 Calathea roseopicta — prayer plant with pink painting

Calathea roseopicta (popularly known as "Rose Painted Calathea") is a beloved species from the Marantaceae family, remarkable for oval green leaves with decorative pink and silver painting. On the upper surface, distinctive ring or pink-silver spot patterns, while the leaf reverse is red-burgundy. Grows compactly and leaves close in the evening (prayer movement).

It's a favorite for interior decor due to its colorful leaves, but requires specific care — high humidity and limescale-free water.

Why do Calathea leaves close at night?

It's the nyctinastic (prayer) movement characteristic of the Marantaceae family. Leaves rise vertically in the evening and return horizontal in the morning, likely for optimizing photosynthesis and water conservation.

What water to use?

Distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis filtered water. Hard tap water causes brown leaf edges and long-term growth problems.

Why do leaf edges become brown?

Common causes: hard water (minerals), low humidity (<50%), substrate too dry or conversely wet. Check all and correct progressively.

Is it toxic?

No, Calathea roseopicta is not toxic to cats, dogs or children. One of the few tropical plants completely safe for homes with pets.

How to propagate?

By rhizome division at repotting. Divide the mother plant into sections with roots and leaves, plant each in new pot. Spring is optimal.
