🌿 Plant Characteristics

Hoya wayetii 'Tricolor' is the variegated variety of the renowned Hoya wayetii — an epiphytic indoor plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines. Its small, lance-shaped leaves display a stunning variegation pattern: creamy-yellow centers bordered by deep green edges, with striking red-pink accents on young leaves and those exposed to bright light. One of the most sought-after varieties of Hoya wayetii among rare plant collectors.

Due to reduced chlorophyll, Tricolor grows somewhat slower than the classic green version, but the aesthetic reward is considerable. This plant shares its epiphytic habitat with Hoya guppyi, Hoya 'Mathilde' and Codonanthe crassifolia. Ideal in a hanging basket, stems reach 50–70 cm in 2–3 years.

☀️ Light Requirements

Hoya wayetii 'Tricolor' needs strong indirect light, more than the green variety, because the creamy areas do not photosynthesize. An east-facing window with morning sun is ideal. Avoid direct midday sun — the variegated areas are extremely sensitive and burn quickly, leaving permanent brown patches.

If the plant receives insufficient light, new leaves may revert to fully green ("reversion") — in which case the plant loses its variegation. When you notice this, move the plant immediately to stronger light. An LED grow lamp (4000–6500K, minimum 40W) for 12 hours daily helps in the low-light cold season. The red-pink color on new leaves appears and intensifies with strong light, including a few hours of late-day sun.

💧 Care and Watering

Semi-succulent leaves store water, but the Tricolor variant is slightly more sensitive to overwatering than the classic green. Let the substrate dry 70–80% between waterings — test with your finger or wooden stick 3–4 cm deep. Water thoroughly until water exits drainage holes, drain excess. In warm season (April–September) water every 7–12 days; in winter every 3 weeks.

Optimal humidity is 55–75% — higher than the green variety, due to sensitivity to dry air. Use a humidifier in winter. Water with room-temperature water, decanted 24 hours. Avoid hard water that stains variegated leaves.

Fertilization: every 3 weeks in growing season, with balanced liquid fertilizer (NPK 10-10-10) diluted to 1/3 of the dose (more diluted than for green wayetii, since the variegated variant is more sensitive to root burn). In winter do not fertilize.

🌡️ Temperature and Climate

Prefers 18–28°C during day and 16–20°C at night. Hoya wayetii Tricolor is sensitive to large temperature fluctuations — keep it in a stable location, away from drafts and direct heat sources. Below 14°C, variegated leaves lose their coloration and irreversible brown patches may appear.

In summer, the plant can be moved to a semi-shaded balcony (see balcony plants) when nighttime temperatures exceed 16°C. Protect from direct wind and rain — variegated areas stain easily.

🪴 Pot and Substrate

The pot must have excellent drainage — terracotta or unglazed ceramic is ideal. Size 1–2 cm larger than roots (Hoya prefers slightly pot-bound roots for flowering).

Ideal substrate: aerated epiphyte mix — 50% fine pine bark, 20% perlite, 20% acidic peat, 10% activated charcoal. The Tricolor variant benefits from slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5). Avoid regular soil.

Repot every 2–3 years, late spring. After repotting, avoid watering for 5–7 days. Being sensitive, the plant may drop a few leaves after repotting — that is normal.

🌼 Flowering and Special Notes

Hoya wayetii Tricolor produces clusters of waxy star-shaped flowers, cream-white with red-burgundy centers, with strong sweet fragrance especially at night. Inflorescences appear on mature stems, on permanent floral peduncles. Do not prune the peduncles — the plant reblooms on them in following years. A mature plant can produce dozens of clusters per season.

Hoya wayetii Tricolor is non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA), excellent as an office plant in well-lit areas. Recommended for medium-experience collectors.

For a coherent collection on Eufloria, combine with classic green Hoya wayetii, Hoya guppyi, Hoya 'Mathilde', Senecio rowleyanus, Codonanthe crassifolia and Aeschynanthus 'Bolero' — all trailing epiphytic plants with similar care. Delivery across the EU.

📚 Additional Cultivation Notes

Hoya wayetii Tricolor propagates through stem cuttings with 2–3 nodes and healthy leaves — but the variegated variant has a lower success rate than green. Cut below a node with sterile blade, let callous 2–3 days, then place in moist sphagnum moss at 24–26°C. Roots appear in 4–8 weeks. Cover with bag for humidity. Choose cuttings with well-variegated leaves but at least 40% green areas, otherwise they lack enough chlorophyll to survive.

Common problems: yellow leaves — overwatering or cold; reduce watering frequency. Shriveled leaves — substrate too dry or damaged roots. Brown spots on variegated areas — sunburn; move plant further from window. New leaves fully green — insufficient light (reversion); increase brightness immediately. No flowers — plant too young (under 2 years), insufficient light, or small day-night difference.

Pests to watch: mealybugs, spider mites and aphids. Inspect leaf undersides monthly. Treatment: wipe with cotton pad soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol, or use insecticidal soap. For heavy infestations, neem oil diluted 1–2% with a drop of dish soap. Treat weekly for 3–4 weeks for complete results.

What are the three colors?

Leaves show three distinct colors: green in the center, cream on margins and intense pink-burgundy on young leaves and extremities. Under bright light, colors become more intense and defined.

How to intensify the colors?

Very bright indirect light is key. Sun stress triggers anthocyanin production intensifying pink, while light maintains cream variegation. Avoid direct sun.

How to care for it?

Very bright indirect light, humidity 50-70%, temperatures 18-28°C, airy substrate. Moderate watering. Tolerates variations.

Is it toxic?

No, Hoya wayetii 'Tricolor' is not toxic to cats, dogs or children. Apocynaceae is safe, but the milky sap may irritate sensitive skin.

How to propagate?

Stem cuttings with variegated leaves in water or moist sphagnum moss. Roots appear in 2-4 weeks. Cuttings inherit tricolor variegation.

How Do I Recognize Hoya wayetii 'Tricolor'?

Narrow elongated leaves with cream-pink edges and silvery-green interior. Fine stems that sway with any breeze, with pronounced variegation in good light.

How Often to Water?

Every 7–10 days in summer, 14–21 days in winter, only when 2–3 cm of substrate are dry. The variegation makes the plant more sensitive to overwatering.

How Much Light for the Variegation?

Bright indirect light (PPFD 200–400). The more light (without direct sun), the more pronounced the pink/cream variegation.

Is It Toxic to Cats?

Non-toxic per ASPCA for cats, dogs, and horses. Milky latex can irritate sensitive skin when cut.

How to Propagate the Variegation?

Stem cuttings with 2–3 nodes, must include variegated leaves. Roots in moist perlite, 3–6 weeks at 22–26°C.
