Hoya multiflora 'Silver Splash' is an exceptional cultivar from the Apocynaceae family that combines ornamental foliage elegance with the spectacle of unique flowers. What makes this Hoya truly special is its dual attraction: the long, lanceolate, deep green leaves are generously scattered with silver spots and splashes that shimmer in the light, creating a remarkable visual effect even in the absence of flowers. When the plant blooms — which it does generously and frequently — it produces clusters (umbels) of white flowers with yellow centres, with petals curved into arrow or shooting star shapes, an absolutely unique appearance in the plant world. Unlike most Hoyas whose flowers are waxy and long-lasting, Hoya multiflora flowers are more delicate and have a subtle, sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening. The plant has a semi-erect growth habit, with branches growing upward rather than trailing, making it versatile in interior arrangements — it can be grown on a vertical support or as a freestanding plant on a shelf. In the D8cm pot we offer, the plant is well-established, with multiple branches and imminent blooming potential.
Hoya multiflora is native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte or semi-epiphyte, anchoring itself to tree trunks and branches in the tropical forest understory, benefiting from filtered light and the constant humidity of tropical air. The Hoya genus comprises over 500 species, all characterised by waxy leaves and flowers grouped in umbels, but Hoya multiflora stands out through its unique flower shape — the petals are strongly reflexed and pointed, giving the impression of small arrows or shooting stars. The species name "multiflora" refers to its tendency to produce multiple inflorescences simultaneously and to rebloom on the same peduncles (spurs) repeatedly. The 'Silver Splash' cultivar was selected for its exceptionally decorative foliage, with silver spots randomly distributed across the leaf surface, a stable genetic trait that persists throughout the plant's life. This combination of silvery foliage and spectacular flowers makes 'Silver Splash' one of the most attractive Hoyas for collectors and tropical plant enthusiasts alike.
Caring for Hoya multiflora 'Silver Splash' is relatively straightforward, as the plant is recognised for its adaptability to indoor conditions. Ideal light is strong indirect light — a spot 1-2 metres from an east or west-facing window is perfect. The plant tolerates medium light, but in insufficient light conditions it will produce fewer flowers and the silver spots will be less pronounced. Intense direct light can burn the leaves. Watering should be done when the top 2-3 cm of substrate have dried — Hoyas prefer wet-dry cycles rather than constantly moist substrate. In winter, reduce watering frequency. It is essential that the pot has excellent drainage — standing water at root level is the primary cause of death in Hoyas. The ideal substrate is an airy mix: pine bark, perlite, and peat in proportions of 2:1:1, or a special epiphyte substrate. Optimal air humidity is 50-70%, though the plant adapts to lower humidity. The ideal temperature is between 18-28°C, with an absolute minimum of 12°C. Fertilisation is done monthly during the growth period (April-September) with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Mind the peduncles: after flowers drop, do not cut the peduncles (spurs) — Hoya multiflora will rebloom on the same peduncles, producing new flower clusters repeatedly.
One of the greatest joys of growing Hoya multiflora 'Silver Splash' is its blooming, which can be surprisingly frequent and generous even under indoor conditions. Flowers appear in clusters (umbels) of 10-25 individual flowers, each flower featuring white, pointed petals strongly curved backward, with a prominent yellow-orange centre. The flower shape is often compared to small arrows, rockets, or archery stars — a wholly unusual appearance in the botanical world. Each flower cluster remains open for approximately 7-14 days, and the plant can simultaneously produce multiple clusters on different branches. The fragrance is subtle, sweet, with notes of honey and citrus, more perceptible in the evening hours when the plant attracts its natural pollinators. To encourage blooming, ensure the plant receives sufficient indirect light, maintain a regular wet-dry cycle (mild water stress can stimulate bud formation), and do not move the plant once you notice buds — movement can cause bud drop. A slight nighttime temperature reduction (3-5°C lower than daytime) can also stimulate flower initiation. Hoya multiflora is one of the fastest Hoyas regarding time from rooting to first bloom — young plants can flower in less than a year from planting.
