🌿 Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata' — String of Hearts Painted in Dawn Colors

Few indoor plants manage to combine decorative function with the visual poetry of Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata'. Long vines, hanging elegantly, are scattered with small heart-shaped leaves, each painted with a unique variegation pattern combining pink-burgundy, cream-white and silver-green.

The popular name "string of hearts" is one of the most poetic common names. Unlike rare demanding varieties, 'Variegata' is surprisingly accessible — a succulent, drought-tolerant.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

The type species was described in 1894 by John Medley Wood, director of the Durban Botanic Garden. Grows on humid rocks of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces in South Africa. The Ceropegia genus (200 species) belongs to the Apocynaceae family — name from "keros" (wax) and "pege" (spring).

Perfectly heart-shaped leaves, 1-2 cm in diameter, arranged opposite on vines with short nodes. Variegation: on dark-green background with silver highlights, purple-pink or cream-white zones are distributed. You'll never find two identical plants. Strong light essential — white zones cannot photosynthesize.

Unique flowers (2-3 cm), elegant tubular shape, structured as a trap for pollinators (gnats). Color: red-purple at base, greenish-pink at opening. Intermittent flowering spring-autumn, on mature root-bound plants.

Trailing succulent with moderate growth (30-60 cm/year). At maturity vines reach 1.5-2 m. Propagation 3 methods: cuttings, tubers ("bulbils"), or layering.
