🌿 Alocasia reginula 'Ninja' — The Silver Jewel of Borneo

Alocasia reginula 'Ninja' is an exceptional cultivar, one of the most sought-after miniature variants in the Alocasia reginula group, celebrated for its velvety black-green foliage and prominent silvery veins that gleam like a katana blade in morning light. The name "Ninja" — a tribute to the dramatic contrast between the dark background and luminous veins — perfectly captures this plant's personality: discreet, elegant, and yet impossible to ignore.

Unlike its better-known sibling, 'Black Velvet', which emphasizes the matte-velvet contrast, 'Ninja' distinguishes itself through the metallic brilliance of its veins — a rare botanical detail that transforms it into a true collector's piece. Within the community of aroid collectors, 'Ninja' is considered one of the most sophisticated selections of the genus, comparable to Alocasia infernalis 'Black Magic' through its dark color palette, but distinguished by the velvety texture characteristic of the reginula group.

Offered in a Ø6cm pot, this miniature grows slowly, retaining the compact proportions that make it ideal for humid terrariums, plant cabinets, and rare botanical collections. It is a plant that rewards patience — each new leaf emerges with its own specific texture and contrast, retaining its charm for years.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Alocasia reginula (from the Latin reginula — "little queen") belongs to the Araceae family and was scientifically described by Australian botanist Alistair Hay in 1998, as part of his taxonomic revision of the Alocasia genus. The species originates from the humid tropical forests of Borneo, more precisely from the lower montane regions of Sabah and Kalimantan, where it develops in the dense shade of the forest canopy, on substrates rich in organic matter and well-drained.

The natural habitat — at altitudes of 200-800 meters, with constant humidity above 80% and temperatures rarely dropping below 20°C — explains this plant's requirements in cultivation. In wild populations, specimens grow in dense clumps in shaded crevices of limestone outcrops or on fallen tree trunks covered with moss. They are slow, low-growing plants, reaching only 25-30 cm in their natural habitat — a trait faithfully preserved in cultivated forms.

The 'Ninja' cultivar was selected through commercial hybridization in the last decade, from a line of A. reginula 'Black Velvet' with exceptionally silvery veins. In recent years, its popularity has exploded in European and North American collections, rivaling close relatives from the same genus such as Alocasia melo or Alocasia zebrina.

🌱 The Ninja Foliage — Dark Velvet with Silver Glints

Adult leaves reach 8-14 cm in length and 5-8 cm in width, with a characteristic shield-shaped (peltate sub-cordate) form. Young leaves emerge tightly coiled in spirals, gradually revealing their hues in the first weeks — a fascinating process worth watching daily. The base color is an extremely dark green, almost black under certain angles, with a velvety texture due to microscopic hairs covering the epidermis.

What makes 'Ninja' unique within the reginula group are its silvery veins, more pronounced and more metallic than in the classic 'Black Velvet' variety. These conductive vessels, arranged in raised relief and pinnately organized, reflect light with a silvery sheen that varies with the angle of illumination. Under a cool LED spotlight, the foliage takes on an almost lunar appearance; in warm natural light, it shines with amber-toned reflections.

The back of the leaf reveals a slightly lighter green reverse, with vascular tissues equally well-defined, while short and compact petioles support the leaves in a slightly elevated position. Young plants produce 1-2 leaves per month under ideal conditions; mature specimens may be slower, but each new leaf is larger and more contrasted than the previous one.

🌸 Flowers and Reproduction

While 'Ninja' is primarily appreciated for its foliage, the plant occasionally produces inflorescences typical of the Araceae family — a yellow-green spadix surrounded by a pale green spathe, 4-6 cm long. Flowers appear at maturity (usually after the second year of cultivation) and are not fragrant; in habitat, they are pollinated by late flies. In indoor cultivation, many growers prefer to remove early inflorescences so the plant can preserve its energy for leaf production.

Natural reproduction of the species occurs through underground rhizomes and bulbils (small corms that form at the base of the plant). These corms can be carefully separated in spring and propagated in moist sphagnum or perlite — an efficient method to expand your collection, similar to propagation in Alocasia sabrina narrow.

🌿 Growth and Care

Alocasia reginula 'Ninja' is a plant with specific requirements but not impossible to cultivate — the key is replicating the conditions of a shady tropical forest: constant warmth, high humidity, aerated substrate, and diffuse light. It is a species that does not tolerate thermal shocks or excessive watering, but once in balance, rewards the grower with stable growth and perfect foliage.

Indoors, it prefers humid cabinets and terrariums; it is an ideal candidate for artificial biotopes alongside other small tropical collector plants. For those without a cabinet, placement near constantly moistened sphagnum moss or use of an electric humidifier is recommended.

  • Light: bright indirect, filtered through curtains or 1-2 m from a bright window (E/W). Tolerates LED grow lights — 12-14 hours/day.
  • Temperature: 20-28°C optimal. Below 16°C growth slows and the plant enters dormancy; does not tolerate below 12°C.
  • Watering: moderate. Let the top layer (~1-2 cm) dry slightly between waterings. Use room-temperature water, decanted or rainwater. Perfect drainage is essential.
  • Humidity: 70-90% ideal. Below 60% leaves curl. Daily fine misting, pebble trays with water, or (best) a cabinet.
  • Substrate: well-aerated aroid mix: 40% coco coir, 30% perlite, 20% pine orchid bark, 10% horticultural charcoal. pH 6.0-6.5.
  • Fertilization: light, spring-summer, with balanced liquid fertilizer (NPK 20-20-20) diluted to 1/4 of recommended dose, every 4-6 weeks.
  • Propagation: corm separation in spring, planted in moist sphagnum or perlite at 23-25°C, under a humid dome.
  • Repotting: every 18-24 months, in spring, into a pot only 1-2 cm larger. Roots prefer restricted space.
