🌿 Anthurium crystallinum 'Dorayaki' — Velvet with Silver Threads

Anthurium crystallinum 'Dorayaki' is a select cultivar of the famous Anthurium crystallinum species, prized for its rounded, velvety leaves of deep green crossed by raised silvery-white veins, like sugar threads sprinkled over a Japanese dorayaki pancake — hence the name.

Unlike the type crystallinum, 'Dorayaki' impresses with its more compact, almost circular short-heart-shaped leaves, with slightly wavy margins and dense velvet texture. The comparison with Anthurium clarinervium is inevitable — both share the aesthetic of silver veins on deep green, but 'Dorayaki' brings the smaller dimension and rounded character that make it perfect for collectors of small-sized plants.

Offered in a Ø6cm pot, this cultivar is an elegant entry into the world of velvety Anthuriums. Grown correctly — in high humidity and indirect light — it will develop successively larger and more contrasted leaves, each a small living picture.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Anthurium crystallinum was first described by Belgian botanists Joseph Linden and Édouard André in 1873, based on specimens collected from the humid forests of Colombia and Panama. The species is found in the humid tropical forests of Central and South America — from Costa Rica to Peru — where it grows as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte on old tree trunks, in the shade of the dense canopy and at constant humidity above 80%.

The 'Dorayaki' cultivar appeared in Asian horticultural selections in the late 2010s, named after the traditional Japanese dessert — two small pancakes sandwiched together with sweet azuki bean paste. The resemblance with the young plant's leaf, shortened and rounded, was evident to the grower who proposed the name. In recent years, its popularity has exploded in European and American collections.

The Araceae family, to which it belongs, is one of the most diverse families of tropical plants, with over 3,700 species spread across the Americas, Asia, and Africa. For further exploration of its botanical cousins, visit the Anthurium category.

🌱 The Foliage — Green Velvet with Silver Threads

Adult leaves reach 10-15 cm in length and 8-12 cm in width, with a distinctive short-heart (cordate-rounded) shape. The texture is strongly velvety due to microscopic hairs that reflect light in shifting tones, and the main and secondary veins are clearly raised in silver-white against the deep green background.

Young leaves emerge from short petioles, initially bronze-pink, transforming into the characteristic deep green after 2-3 weeks. This phenomenon — called the "flush" — is one of the great joys of Anthurium collectors.

The back of the leaves is pale green with veins equally well-defined. On the lower surface, the hairs are less dense — an adaptation for controlled transpiration in the humid tropical forest habitat.

🌸 Flowers and Reproduction

Typical Araceae family inflorescences appear at maturity (usually after the second year): a cream-greenish cylindrical spadix surrounded by a long, pale green spathe, 5-8 cm long. The flowers are small, arranged in a spiral on the spadix, and are not fragrant. Pollination in habitat is done by flies and small insects.

In cultivation, fruits — small red berries with seeds inside — are rarely produced, but propagation by division or by stem cuttings with aerial roots is simple and efficient, similar to methods used in Anthurium regale.

🌿 Growth and Care

Anthurium crystallinum 'Dorayaki' is a species with specific humidity and light requirements, but not impossible to cultivate. The key is replicating the tropical forest shade: warmth, high humidity, aerated substrate, and diffuse light.

For aroid lovers, it is a complementary species with Anthurium magnificum and other velvety plants from the rare plants category.

  • Light: bright indirect, 1-2 m from E/W window. Avoid direct sun.
  • Temperature: 20-28°C optimal. Below 16°C growth slows.
  • Watering: moderate, let the top layer dry slightly between waterings. Decanted or rainwater.
  • Humidity: 70-90% ideal. Below 60% leaves develop brown spots.
  • Substrate: well-aerated aroid mix: 40% coco coir, 30% perlite, 20% pine bark, 10% charcoal.
  • Fertilization: light, spring-summer, NPK 20-20-20 diluted to 1/4, every 4-6 weeks.
  • Propagation: division in spring or stem cuttings with aerial roots, planted in moist sphagnum.
  • Repotting: every 18-24 months into a pot only 1-2 cm larger.
