🌿 The Plant That Prays at Sunset — Living Leaves That Move and Fold Every Evening

Maranta cristata 'Intense' is one of the most fascinating houseplants, not only for its superbly coloured foliage but also for an almost magical behaviour: every evening, as darkness falls, the leaves rise and fold gently upward, like palms clasped in prayer, only to open again toward the light in the morning. This daily dance, scientifically called "nyctinasty", earned it the popular name "prayer plant" — a living plant that seems to breathe with the rhythm of the day.

Its foliage is as spectacular as it is dynamic: oval, velvety leaves of a rich green, marked with an intense pattern of blotches and contrasting veins, in shades ranging from dark green to bright red and pink. The 'Intense' variety is selected precisely for its especially vivid, contrasting colouring, which turns each leaf into a small work of art.

Offered in a generous 14 cm pot, it is a well-developed plant with dense foliage and a full presence. Its gently arching, cascading habit makes it wonderful on a shelf, from which the leaves can flow elegantly, or on a table, as a lively, ever-moving focal point.

And, as a precious bonus, Maranta is a non-toxic plant, perfectly safe around pets and children — spectacular, lively greenery you can place without worry anywhere in the home.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Maranta belongs to the Marantaceae family, the great family of prayer plants, which also includes Calathea and Ctenanthe. The genus is native to the humid tropical forests of Central and South America, particularly Brazil, where the plants grow on the shady forest floor, beneath the dense canopy of tall trees, receiving only filtered light — an adaptation that explains their preference for humid shade and their sensitivity to direct sun.

The genus was named in honour of Bartolomeo Maranta, a sixteenth-century Italian botanist and physician. The plants of the Marantaceae family are famous for the daily movement of their leaves — nyctinasty — a phenomenon by which the leaves rise in the evening and lower in the morning, thanks to special cells, called pulvini, at the base of each leaf, which change their pressure according to the light.

The 'Intense' variety is a horticultural selection prized for its especially vivid, contrasting colouring. These colourful prayer plants have become, in recent years, among the most beloved houseplants, thanks to the unique combination of decorative foliage and lively behaviour that makes them fascinating to watch.

Its origin as a tropical understorey plant explains all its needs: a preference for constant warmth, high humidity, filtered indirect light and protection from direct sun and dry air.

🌱 The Foliage

The foliage is, without doubt, the great attraction of this plant. The leaves are oval, broad and velvety, of a rich green, carried on thin petioles that hold them in a dense, gently arching clump. Their surface has a fine, silky texture that catches the light softly and showcases the coloured pattern.

The hallmark of the 'Intense' variety is its vivid colouring: over the green background of the leaf unfolds an intense pattern of blotches and darker zones, set symmetrically on either side of the central vein, while the veins themselves can take on shades of bright red or pink, like coloured veining. On the underside of the leaves, the colour often turns to an intense wine-red or purple, beautifully visible when the leaves rise in the evening.

It is precisely this evening rising of the leaves that makes Maranta such a special plant: at sunset, the leaves fold upward, revealing their coloured underside, and in the morning they open again, stretching toward the light. It is a plant that never stays still but actively takes part in the rhythm of the day, offering a lively spectacle every time you look at it.

As the plant grows, the stems lengthen and the leaves multiply, forming a dense clump that spills gracefully over the edge of the pot, ideal for a shelf or a tall stand.

🌸 The Flowers

At maturity and in good conditions, Maranta can produce small, discreet flowers, usually white or slightly lilac, carried on thin stems that rise from among the leaves. Although not spectacular, these flowers have a delicate charm and are a sign that the plant is healthy and contented.

For the plant lover, however, flowering is by no means the goal — this plant is grown exclusively for its colourful foliage and its fascinating movement, which offer a permanent spectacle regardless of the season. The flowers, when they appear, remain a pleasant curiosity, not the main reason we love Maranta.

The true value of this plant lies in its vividly coloured leaves and their daily dance, which does not fade or pass but repeats evening after evening, year after year.

🌱 Growth and Development

Maranta cristata 'Intense' is a moderate-growing plant that forms a dense clump of leaves on gently arching, cascading stems. Its habit makes it ideal for hanging pots, tall shelves or the edges of planters, from which the leaves can hang gracefully. With age, the plant can be divided for propagation or pinched to stay dense.

Its great need is humidity: as a tropical understorey plant, it needs humid air to keep its leaves beautiful, without dry tips. With the right humidity, warmth and filtered light, however, it becomes a grateful plant that rewards care with vividly coloured foliage and its fascinating daily movement. It is also non-toxic, so safe in any home.

  • Light: indirect, medium to bright light; shield it completely from strong direct sun, which bleaches and scorches its leaves — imitate the gentle light of the tropical understorey.
  • Temperature: prefers 18–26 °C and constant warmth; keep it away from cold below 15 °C and from cold draughts.
  • Watering: keep the substrate constantly lightly moist, watering as soon as the top layer begins to dry; preferably use room-temperature water, without excess salts; do not let the plant dry out completely.
  • Humidity: essential and high; regular misting, grouping with other plants or a humidifier prevent dry leaf tips and keep the plant healthy.
  • Substrate: an airy, rich mix that can retain moisture — a quality houseplant substrate with added coco fibre and perlite is ideal.
  • Fertilising: feed every 3–4 weeks in the warm growing season with a balanced, diluted fertiliser; reduce in winter.
  • Propagation: by dividing the clump when repotting, carefully separating portions with their own roots and leaves.

Thanks to its vividly coloured foliage and its fascinating movement, Maranta cristata 'Intense' looks superb alongside other prayer plants (Calathea, Ctenanthe) and humidity-loving plants, together creating a corner of tropical jungle full of colour and life.
