🌿 A Green Heart Full of Meaning — the Symbol Plant of Love and Patience

Hoya kerrii 'I Love You' is, without doubt, one of the most romantic plants in the world: its thick, succulent leaves have the perfect shape of a heart, which has turned it into a living symbol of love and a beloved gift for sweethearts, on Valentine's Day, anniversaries or simply as a green, lasting "I love you". A heart that does not wilt but grows slowly, year after year — a truly meaningful gift.

Each leaf is a small work of nature: thick, firm and waxy, of a deep, glossy green, with a delicate notch at the tip that accentuates its heart shape. Its fleshy texture, pleasant to the touch, and its elegant matte sheen make this Hoya a plant as beautiful as it is symbolic.

Offered in a 6 cm pot, the heart plant is a perfect gift but also a fascinating collector's plant. It grows slowly, but with patience it can develop long, climbing stems over time, bearing several heart leaves, transforming from a single heart into a cascade of green hearts.

And, as a precious bonus, Hoya kerrii is a non-toxic plant, perfectly safe around pets and children — a green heart you can give and keep without worry anywhere in the home.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Hoya kerrii belongs to the Apocynaceae family, the great family of latex-bearing plants, and to the genus Hoya, which includes hundreds of species of epiphytic climbing plants spread through the tropical forests of South-East Asia. This species is native to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and southern China, where it grows epiphytically on tree trunks in the humid forests, using them only as a support, without being parasitic.

The genus Hoya was named in honour of the English gardener Thomas Hoy, who worked in the eighteenth century for the Duke of Northumberland. The plants of this genus are popularly known as "wax plants", because of the waxy, glossy texture of their leaves and flowers, which look sculpted from wax or modelled from porcelain.

The epithet "kerrii" honours the memory of Arthur Francis George Kerr, an Irish botanist and physician who studied the flora of Thailand in the early twentieth century. The perfect heart shape of the leaves has made this species extremely popular as a gift plant, often sold as a single heart leaf planted in a pot — a charming representation of love.

Its origin as an epiphyte of the tropical forest explains all the plant's needs: a preference for warmth, bright indirect light and a very airy substrate that imitates the bark of the trees on which it grows in nature, as well as its remarkable drought tolerance, thanks to its thick, succulent leaves.

🌱 The Foliage

The foliage is, without doubt, the whole charm of this plant. The leaves are thick, fleshy and firm, in a perfect heart shape, with a small notch at the tip, of a deep to medium green, with a waxy, slightly glossy surface. This natural, unmistakable heart shape is what has made Hoya kerrii such a beloved and symbolic plant.

The waxy texture of the leaves is not only beautiful but functional: the waxy layer reduces water loss and allows the leaves to store moisture, making this Hoya a remarkably drought-resistant plant. The leaves stay firm and healthy for a long time, pleasant to the touch and easy to wipe clean of dust.

Many specimens are offered as a single heart leaf, planted upright in a pot — an adorable representation of love, perfect as a symbolic gift. Such a leaf can stay beautiful and green for years. With patience and in good conditions, the plant can develop from it or from new shoots climbing stems bearing several heart leaves.

When the plant develops fully, it forms a vine with numerous heart leaves set along the stems, creating a green cascade of hearts, particularly decorative on a shelf or in a hanging pot.

🌸 The Flowers

Like all plants of the Hoya genus, kerrii can produce, at maturity and in good conditions, the characteristic flowers that earned the genus the name "wax plant". The flowers are grouped in round, hemispherical umbels formed of numerous small, star-shaped flowers, of a velvety or waxy texture, usually cream-white with a darker, reddish or brownish central crown.

These flowers emit a sweet fragrance, more pronounced in the evening and at night, and secrete tiny droplets of sweet nectar that glisten like dew. Flowering appears, however, only on well-developed plants with several leaves and mature stems — a solitary heart leaf will not flower, because it needs a complete plant to produce flowers.

Patience is therefore the key: if you also want flowers, give the plant time and good conditions to develop into a mature vine. Whether it flowers or not, however, the heart leaves remain the true treasure of this plant.

🌱 Growth and Development

Hoya kerrii is a slow-growing plant, especially in the form of a single heart leaf, which can stay that way for a long time before developing a stem. With patience and in good conditions, however, the plant can form climbing stems over time, bearing ever more heart leaves. Like all Hoyas, it enjoys a slightly snug pot and should not be repotted too often.

It is a grateful, long-lived plant, perfectly safe around pets, being non-toxic. It tolerates occasional forgetfulness with watering very well thanks to its thick, succulent leaves, making it ideal both for beginners and for busy plant lovers — a gift plant that stays with you for many years.

  • Light: bright, indirect, abundant light — essential for healthy growth; it tolerates a few hours of gentle morning sun, but shield it from strong direct midday sun.
  • Temperature: prefers 18–28 °C and constant warmth; keep it away from cold below 12 °C and from cold draughts.
  • Watering: water thoroughly, then let the substrate dry out for the most part between waterings; the succulent leaves store water, so the plant tolerates drying far better than excess water — overwatering is the most common risk.
  • Humidity: it does well in moderate humidity; it also appreciates higher humidity but is not particularly demanding.
  • Substrate: a very airy, well-draining, epiphytic-type mix with pine bark, perlite and a little substrate, imitating the bark of the trees on which it grows in nature.
  • Fertilising: feed every 4–6 weeks in the warm growing season with a balanced, diluted fertiliser; a single leaf in particular needs very little.
  • Propagation: by stem cuttings that include one or two nodes (a single leaf without a node will not develop a complete plant); roots in an airy, warm substrate.

As both a symbol and a collector's plant, Hoya kerrii looks superb on its own, as a meaningful gift, or alongside other Hoya species and succulent plants with similar needs, bringing into the home a green heart that is lasting and full of charm.
