🌿 About Heliamphora

Heliamphora, commonly known as the “sun pitcher”, is a genus of carnivorous plants native to the highland regions of the tepui mountains in Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. These fascinating plants evolved in extreme conditions, on isolated mountain plateaus, developing tubular leaves that function as natural pitfall traps for insects. Unlike other pitcher plants, Heliamphora does not produce a complete lid over the tube opening — instead, it has a small “nectar spoon” that attracts prey with the sweet nectar it secretes.

💡 Light Requirements and Placement

Heliamphora prefers bright but indirect light. Place the plant in a well-lit spot, away from direct midday sun rays, which can scorch the delicate leaves. An east or west-facing window is ideal. The plant also thrives under artificial grow lights, with 12-14 hours of daily illumination.

💧 Watering and Humidity

This plant requires high humidity (60-80%) and a permanently moist substrate, but not waterlogged. Use only distilled, demineralised, or rainwater — tap water contains minerals that can damage the sensitive roots. The tray method (1-2 cm of water in the saucer) works well for maintaining constant moisture. Regular misting of the leaves helps maintain the optimal humidity level.

🌡️ Temperature and Environment

Heliamphora originates from cool mountain environments, preferring temperatures between 15-25°C during the day and 10-18°C at night. The temperature difference between day and night is important for the plant's health. Avoid exposure to temperatures above 30°C for prolonged periods. A terrarium or cool greenhouse provides ideal conditions for this demanding species.

🪴 Substrate and Repotting

Plant Heliamphora in a mix of live sphagnum moss or dried sphagnum with perlite, in a 2:1 ratio. Never use universal potting soil or compost, as the nutrients in the soil can be fatal for carnivorous plants. Repotting is done rarely, once every 2-3 years, using plastic pots with drainage holes. The ideal pot is small in size, as Heliamphora has a compact root system.
