🌿 A Tricolour Rosette With Playful Runners — the Cottage Charm of the Strawberry Saxifrage

Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' is one of the most romantic and lively small plants: a rosette of round, velvety leaves coloured in a rare palette of green, cream, pink and red, which sends out in all directions thin red runners, like a strawberry plant, at the ends of which little baby plants are born. Hence its popular name of "strawberry saxifrage" or "strawberry begonia" — although it has no botanical connection to either strawberries or begonias.

This plant has a special charm, slightly nostalgic and cottage-inspired, recalling the lively windowsills of country houses. Its rounded leaves, with lacy margins and a finely downy surface, are traced with silver veins and edged with pink and cream, each leaf a small work of colour. And its red runners, hanging gracefully over the edge of the pot, add playful movement and an element of surprise — each baby plant at their ends can be detached and planted separately.

Offered in a 6 cm pot, it is a young, lively plant ready to extend its runners and multiply its rosettes. It grows beautifully in cool, bright conditions and rewards care with an ever-richer cascade of coloured leaves and baby plants — practically a plant that multiplies itself before your eyes.

And, as a precious bonus, 'Tricolor' is a non-toxic plant, perfectly safe around pets and children — colourful, charming greenery you can place without worry anywhere.

🌍 Origin and Botanical History

Saxifraga stolonifera belongs to the Saxifragaceae family and is native to East Asia — to China, Japan and Korea, where it grows naturally in moist, shady places, on rocks, banks and in the cracks of stones on the cool slopes of forests. The genus name "Saxifraga" comes from Latin, from "saxum" (stone) and "frangere" (to break), a reference to the habit of many species in this genus of growing in rock fissures, appearing to "break" them.

The epithet "stolonifera" describes its most characteristic feature: the production of stolons, those thin, creeping stems, like a strawberry's, at the ends of which baby plants form, ready to take root. This vegetative propagation strategy allowed the plant to form extensive carpets in its natural habitat and makes it today so easy and pleasant to propagate in cultivation.

The 'Tricolor' variety is a particularly prized horticultural selection, remarkable for its variegation in three colours — green, cream and pink-red. This coloured form is somewhat more delicate and more demanding of light than the classic green species, but rewards care with foliage of exceptional elegance. For centuries, saxifrages have been loved in the gardens and on the windowsills of Asia and Europe for their discreet charm and the ease with which they multiply.

Its origin in moist, cool places explains one of its important preferences: unlike many tropical houseplants, 'Tricolor' enjoys milder temperatures and does not cope well with excessive heat combined with dry air — an essential detail for keeping it colourful and healthy.

🌱 The Foliage

The foliage is, without doubt, the great joy of this plant. The leaves are rounded, slightly lobed, with finely lacy margins, and are carried on pinkish petioles that lift them into a dense, orderly rosette. Their surface has a velvety, finely downy texture, covered with delicate little hairs that catch the light and give the leaves a soft, almost plush appearance.

What makes 'Tricolor' unmistakable is its palette of colours: the dark-green background of the leaf is traced with bright silver veins that form a fine, map-like pattern, while the margins are edged with pink, red and cream, in irregular zones that vary from leaf to leaf. On the underside of the leaves, the colour often turns to an intense wine-red, beautifully visible when the plant trails and the leaves curl back.

The thin red runners detach from the rosette and extend in all directions, hanging gracefully over the edge of the pot like coloured threads. At the end of each, a small baby plant forms, a perfect miniature rosette of the mother plant, adding a playful, dynamic element to the whole look — the plant always seems in motion, always expanding.

This combination of velvety, coloured leaves and dancing runners makes 'Tricolor' a particularly charming plant for hanging pots, for shelves from which the runners can flow freely, and for indoor arrangements where its colourful foliage brings a warm, lively accent.

🌸 The Flowers

Unlike many foliage plants, Saxifraga stolonifera also offers a bloom of rare delicacy. On mature, well-cared-for plants, thin, airy stems rise from the centre of the rosette, bearing at their tips panicles of small white flowers of an unusual, asymmetric shape: each flower has two much longer lower petals, like wings or a tiny dress, and three small upper petals, dotted with yellow and pink.

These flowers, which usually appear in late spring and summer, float above the foliage like a cloud of tiny butterflies, adding an airy, poetic charm to the plant. Though small, they are utterly enchanting on close inspection, being one of the most graceful blooms in the houseplant world.

Even if the plant does not flower every year, the coloured foliage and the runners remain the main attraction, offering a permanent spectacle regardless of the season. Flowering, when it appears, is a precious bonus — the sign of a happy, well-cared-for plant.

🌱 Growth and Development

Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' is a moderate-growing plant that forms a dense rosette of leaves and constantly expands through runners, producing generation after generation of baby plants. Its combined habit — a compact rosette at the centre and trailing runners at the periphery — makes it ideal for hanging pots, tall shelves or the edges of planters from which the runners can hang freely.

Unlike many houseplants, 'Tricolor' prefers cooler, bright conditions, making it an excellent choice for bright windowsills sheltered from scorching sun and for rooms that are not overheated. It enjoys humidity and a constantly lightly moist substrate. With these simple conditions met, the plant will offer you vividly coloured foliage and an ever-renewing cascade of baby plants.

  • Light: bright, indirect light; the variegated variety needs more light than the green species to keep its colours, but shield it from strong direct sun that can scorch its downy leaves.
  • Temperature: prefers cooler conditions, 15–22 °C; it tolerates moderate temperatures well but suffers in excessive heat combined with dry air; keep it away from frost.
  • Watering: keep the substrate constantly lightly moist, watering as soon as the top layer begins to dry; avoid both complete drying and standing water; water at the base, sparing the downy rosette.
  • Humidity: enjoys moderate to high humidity; grouping with other plants or a humidifier suit it well, but avoid misting the downy leaves directly.
  • Substrate: an airy, well-draining mix that can still retain moisture — a quality universal substrate with added perlite is ideal.
  • Fertilising: feed every 4 weeks in the warm growing season with a balanced, diluted fertiliser; reduce in winter.
  • Propagation: extremely easy — detach the baby plants from the ends of the runners and plant them in moist substrate, where they root quickly.

Thanks to its colourful foliage and playful runners, 'Tricolor' beautifully complements cottage-charm plant arrangements and hanging pots, being that lively, romantic accent that brings the whole composition to life.

Is 'strawberry begonia' a true Begonia?

No, 'strawberry begonia' is NOT a true Begonia. It belongs to the Saxifraga genus (Saxifragaceae family), not Begoniaceae. The popular name comes from the leaf similarity to Begonia and production of stolons with plantlets like in strawberries.

What are stolons?

Stolons are long lateral stems (30-50 cm) that grow from the base of the plant and bear miniature new plantlets at the tip — clones of the mother plant with the same chromatic pattern. It is a natural vegetative propagation method, just like in strawberries.

How is Saxifraga 'Tricolor' propagated?

EXTREMELY easy by plantlets on stolons. When a plantlet has 3-4 own leaves, cut the stolon and plant the plantlet in a small pot with moist substrate. Maintain high humidity until it takes root (2-3 weeks). Almost guaranteed success.

What temperatures does it prefer?

Moderate temperatures, 15-22°C optimal. It is better adapted to cooler homes than to overheated apartments. In winter tolerates 10°C. Avoid excessive heat which stresses it. Prefers the coolness characteristic of the natural mountain habitat.

Is Saxifraga 'Tricolor' toxic?

Saxifraga stolonifera is considered non-toxic or only mildly irritating to cats, dogs and humans. It is not a dangerous plant, but is not recommended for consumption. It is one of the safer choices for homes with pets.
